Athletes know that to keep their bodies in elite shape they need to be very careful about what they put in their bodies when it comes to nutrition and supplements. Depending on the level of competition athletes may need to ensure that they are focusing on maximizing their diet to erase any kind of deficiency they might have. Common nutritional deficiencies include having low levels of iron or vitamin D so expect many athletes to be working with high levels of nuts, red meats, seafood, or yogurts. Depending on the sport, athletes will have their meals leading up to a game or race designed to give them an edge over their competitors.

Athletes need their bodies to be in top shape while competing but also their mental health is a key to success. Energy-packed and low-fat choices that are popular amongst athletes include lean meat, hard-boiled eggs, vegetables, sugar-free drinks, whole grain and wheat breads, peanut butter, pasta, grilled chicken, and more. While the amount of food that an athlete might eat could be more than the average person, the amount of fat and artificial sugar in their diet is lower than most. Athletes often eat high-performance food that gives them energy which are high in protein, fiber and low in fat.

Athletes often eat every 2-4 hours due to the nature of their work. They also avoid eating late at night and right before bed. When it comes to their food, athletes often plan their food ahead of time through a rigorous schedule and keep themselves hydrated. As regular individuals, we have learned so much from scientists, nutritionists, and policymakers on what type of food we should eat and when to eat; but, why not add athletes to the group? For many athletes, it’s clear that whatever diet and training regimen they are in works because we can see the results in their performance.
